When making calls to phone numbers that do not begin with the usual prefix of the autonomous community of destination, we have to be very careful, because we may be calling nomadic numbers. These numbers, like many others, have a special rate.

So that you are not clear about the types of telephone numbers that you can find, we are going to explain the difference between normal and premium rate numbers. But, first of all, what do we mean by ….?

Standard Tariff Numbers.

Or also known as geographic numbers are those beginning with the prefix 91 to 98 (except 940) and 82, 84, 85, 86, 87 and 88. The price of the call depends on whether it is a local, provincial, interprovincial or national call.

Special Tariff Numbers.

These are national numbers with a higher or lower cost depending on the fourth digit of the telephone number.
Having explained the differences, let’s go into what are the calls to nomadic numbers and other premium rate numbers that we can find. These numbers are normally used by companies that have a virtual switchboard and receive a large number of calls.

What are nomadic numbers in Spain?

In the case of Spain, the Government established in the BOE of August 2005 that the prefix for VoIP nomadic numbers would be 51. So, the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and for the Information Society, has defined nomadic numbers as:

“Publicly available electronic communications services that offer two-way voice communications in real time from access points to which users can connect remotely and allow both the establishment and reception of calls, and may additionally include other types of capabilities such as multimedia communication.”

These numbers were created to provide companies with a telephony service throughout the national territory, regardless of the geographical location in which the company is located. The only requirement is that the subscribing company resides in Spain.

Traditionally, many companies used the commercial prefixes 902 / 901. However, the advantages are obtained when using the 51 prefix, because at the time of receiving the invoicing it should appear as a landline. And, therefore, the cost of the calls made would be included in a flat rate, although there is always the exception to some companies that bill per minute.

What premium rate numbers are there?

Within the premium rate telephone numbers, we can find a wide range. So far they are:

  • Automatic collect numbers (800 and 900). These calls are free for the caller, who pays for the call is the company that contracted that number.
  • 902 or toll-free numbers: these are numbers that cost more expensive than a provincial call, but cheaper than a national call. The user pays the cost of the call, the company receives nothing and the money for the call is shared by the telephone companies.
  • 901: they are similar to 902 but cheaper. Their cost is shared between the user and the company that contracted the number.
  • 905: they are used by television contests. Depending on the fourth digit of the number, the price will be higher or lower (it ranges from 0.30 € to 1.65 €).
  • 909: is for Internet access, but is not billed by the access operator (flat rate with the destination operator).
  • 908: is for Internet access and is billed by the access operator (caller pays).
  • 907: is for Internet access and is billed by the access operator.
  • Premium rate numbers: these are the most expensive and provide value-added information. There are 3 types:
    • 803: Adult-only services.
    • 806: Leisure and entertainment services
    • 807: Professional services
  • 118: These are short numbers for user information services. These are numbers with unregulated price rates.
  • Nomadic voice numbers or nomadic numbers VoIP: these are numbers starting with 5 or 81 to 88. They allow the company to have a telephone number assigned to it regardless of its geographic location and are made via IP. Their cost is lower than traditional rate calls.

If you are interested in hiring for your virtual PBX the service of a special tariff numbering such as nomadic numbers, we have what you are looking for.
